Home Remodeling Steps - A checklist to help you plan your next remodel.

A Pre-Remodel Checklist

Set Your Goals:

The first step to a successful remodel is to determine the purpose of your remodel. Are you hoping to enhance the aesthetics of your home? Or, is functionality your main goal? Or maybe your just looking to increase the property value of your home. Whatever the goal, these steps can help you stay on track and keep focused on that goal!

  1. Budget Planning: The first step is to establish a realistic budget, including a buffer for unexpected costs. There is nothing worse than getting started and not being able to finish in time due to lack of funds.

  2. Research and Inspiration: Gather ideas and inspirations from magazines, online platforms, or showrooms. Keeping a Pinterest board of ideas has become a great way that homeowners can save and share their ideas with General Contractors and Designers.

  3. Hire Professionals: Find reliable contractors, designers, or architects. Check reviews and references. This is a super important step! Don't hurry your decision and make sure you come to a fair agreement with whoever you hire.

  4. Create a Timeline: Outline the project timeline, including start and end dates, to keep things on track. Timelines can be tricky and can change with things like backorders on products. Knowing these things ahead of time can make for a much smoother remodel.

  5. Permits and Approvals: Ensure you have all necessary permits and approvals from local authorities. This can also be tricky because city and county codes change periodically and costs to obtain permits can increase over time.

  6. Detailed Plan: Work with your contractor to create detailed plans and blueprints. Knowing where you are at on the plans is super important. If you learn just a little on how to read your plans, it will go a long way to understanding the steps involved and the times those steps can take.

  7. Choose Materials and Finishes: Select all materials and finishes in advance to avoid delays. Again, this is really important and can help you understand the timelines in putting things together.

  8. Prepare Your Home: Protect your belongings and set up a temporary kitchen or living area if necessary. This can be really helpful in making sure your everyday life isn't interrupted too much. Expect to have your daily life routines change. It's part of the process in remodeling.

  9. Communication Plan: Keep open lines of communication with your contractor for updates and changes. If you feel your aren't receiving proper communication from your contractor, don't be afraid to tell them. It's their job to make sure you understand the steps involved in your remodel.

Steps During the Remodel:

  • Stay Flexible: Be prepared for adjustments and surprises. It's all part of the process.

  • Monitor Progress: Regularly check the progress and ensure everything is on track.

  • Quality Control: Inspect the work to ensure it meets your standards.
